Step 3 — the money

Scholarships, country by country and university by university

Pick a country, then pick a university, and you get exactly what money exists there, how much it saves, the steps to claim it and the documents needed. Admission and funding are always two separate applications.

At a glance

How much each route can save per year

Best realistic annual saving on tuition

Drill down

Country → university → procedure

Italy — funding is mostly a fee reduction, not a cheque

Country rule: public tuition is linked to family income, so the paperwork you file matters more than your marks.

  • Three separate levers: university merit scholarship, regional DSU need-based aid, income-linked fee reduction
  • All three have their own calls and deadlines — none is automatic with admission
  • Non-resident families must supply income and property documents plus an economic-status equivalence
  • Visa pre-application runs through Universitaly and must line up with the offer
  • Two-year master's — budget and fund both years, not one

Now drill into the university

Politecnico di Milano

MSc Interior and Spatial Design

Tuition can fall from ~₹3–5L to a small administrative fee; merit route adds ~₹11L/yr

What funding exists

  • Merit-based international scholarship: full tuition waiver plus a gross allowance of up to €10,000 per year
  • DSU / regional right-to-study aid (need-based): grant, canteen and housing support
  • Income-linked tuition reduction — the biggest single saving for an Indian family

The procedure, in order

  • Apply for admission through Apply@polimi first and note your application ID
  • Tick / submit the separate merit-scholarship application inside the same portal window
  • File the income-based fee-reduction request (ISEE-equivalent for non-residents) in the fee season
  • Submit the DSU request separately on the regional call — it can be filed before full registration

Documents to have ready

  • Passport, bachelor's degree certificate and full transcripts
  • Portfolio (15–20 pages) and motivation letter
  • IELTS Academic 6.5+ (or English-medium certificate) by the stated certification date
  • Family income, ITRs and property documents with certified translations for need-based aid

Deadline reality for 2026

Merit call for 2026/27 required a late-2025 application with English certification by 21 Feb 2026 — realistic target for a fresh applicant is the next intake or the need-based routes.
